Aiken,
South Carolina: Celebrating more than a
CENTURY OF EQUESTRIAN HERITAGE
Aiken is horse country. Originally known as a winter colony for
international equestrian enthusiasts in the 1800’s, Aiken was quickly
populated by prominent equestrian families such as the Vanderbilts,
Burdens, Spaldings, Hitchcocks, Whitneys and Posts, who moved to Aiken in
favor of the year-round mild climate and surprisingly few bothersome
insects. They soon learned that Aiken was the ideal setting to maintain
their sporting lifestyles.
Home to the Thoroughbred Hall of Fame, Aiken has a thriving equestrian
culture and is an important part of the international Polo scene. In
Aiken, you will find the finest equestrian facilities in the country
offering 13 Polo fields, fox hunting, trail riding, eventing, dressage,
reining, cutting, barrels and world class equestrian events including
Aiken's Triple Crown, three successive weekends of horse competitions held
in the Spring, as well as the Aiken Fall Steeplechase.
Today, Aiken’s love for horses is paired with its rich history and sense
of community. Aiken is a diverse community that offers an ample helping
of southern charm along with culture, theatre, the arts, fine dining, low
cost of living and a thriving social scene. Frequented by the likes of
Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Fred Astaire, Aiken has been
the backdrop for many a colorful story. |
